ARCHIVE OF RECENT EVENTS

CHANUKAH EVENTS

As usual plenty was happening for all ages on Chanukah, with Chanukah Kiddushim, a magnificent tea and social arranged by the Social & Cultural Committee and events for children of all ages.

CHOLENT KIDDUSHIM

As the cold winter continued hot cholent Kiddushim were held to keep everyone suitably fuelled. We were joined by Alex Brummer of the Daily Mail who gave a talk on current media issues of relevence to the Jewish community.

TU BISHVAT

Tu Bishvat this year fell on Shabbat and a "Fruity" Shabbat Lunch for fifty members of the community who came together to celebrate the occasion.

CHEDER FRIDAY NIGHT

The Cheder held a successful Friday night for Cheder children and their families. A traditional meal was served along with explanations songs and customs which were given by different children.

HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY

Our thanks to Choirmaster Tony Blaisebalk and the CUS Choir for performing in the HMD event, along with all of those who attended this event at the City Hall. This tear the community was particularly well-represented at this important civic occasion.

SHAVUOT

Shavuot events were well-attended.  The Aufruf for Roger Gewolb, which took place on the second day, definitely helped!  Educational events and children's programmes were held for all ages, including toddlers, children and teenagers.  A late-night learning session and an in-shul learning session were held by Rabbi Wollenberg, and much cheesecake was consumed throughout the holiday.

Cheder prizegiving

Long-time supporter of Cardiff United Synagogue, Harry Poloway was the Guest of Honour at this year’s Cheder Prize Giving.  Teachers, children, parents and grandparents were present to see the achievements of our children this year. In addition, a new trophy cabinet has been installed in the Shul foyer giving pride of place to all the Cheder trophies.

Adult education

Wednesday night is now “Adult Education Night”.  So far there have been a wide variety of topics ranging from yomim tovim to ethical issues, mysticism and much more.  No Hebrew knowledge required—come along and join us any Wednesday night at 8:00pm.

Shul politics

No not the usual variety!  We were joined by Jenny Willott MP and Jenny Randerson AM who stayed for the Shabbos service, Kiddush and then joined the Rabbi & Rebbetzen for lunch at their home.  Our Representatives were very impressed with the warm welcome they received from our community as well as the range of activities taking place within our Shul.  It is important to build bridges and that is what was achieved by this annual exercise.

Rose dedication

A beautiful rose garden was dedicated in memory of the late Lionel Poole the presence of Joanne Poole and family, Rabbi Wollenberg, CUS Members and rose-growers from across the region.  The garden is located by the tennis courts at the ‘Rec’ end of Roath Park.  Joanne Poole has kindly donated some roses for the Shul as well which will be located near the front entrance.

Cardiff Jewish Day camp

Cardiff Jewish Day Camp, now in its 6th Year, once again provided a week of fun, safe and above all JEWISH activities for local children.  Cardiff is one  of the very few communities of its size which hosts a Summer Day Camp and it is wonderful to be able to offer this  facility to the Cardiff Jewish Community

RECENT EVENTS: Pesach 5769

Despite a number of our members who took advantage of Pesach falling during the Bank Holidays to escape Cardiff for Yomtov, there were decent attendances throughout Pesach particularly for Yizkor on the last day.

This year’s Communal Seder was attended by over 45 adults and children of all ages.  Rabbi Wollenberg gave explanations and homilies on the Haggadah and the catering was ably organised by Jonathan Rapport and Ruth Levene.  Our thanks to all those who worked so hard to make the evening the enjoyable success which it was.

During dinner Rabbi Wollenberg entertained with some Jewish jokes and participants attempted some cheesy Pesach versions of well-known Broadway songs.

It was particularly gratifying to see the increased attendance this year which saw a number of families attending the Communal Seder who had not done so previously.

Mock seder

Earlier (before Pesach) the Cheder hosted the annual Mock Seder for Cheder children to learn more about Pesach and to practice for the real thing.

Birkas Hachamah

Once in 28 years a very rare event takes place - the “Blessing of the Sun” - Birkas Hachama which took  place after the Minyan and the traditional Siyum - Conclusion of the Talmud - on Erev Pesach.  Fortunately the sun was out for the occasion, though not in enough force for the children’s arts and crafts which involved light-sensitive paper and had to be postponed for a sunnier day!

Adult education

Wednesday night is now “Adult Education Night”.  So far there has been a series of talks by Rabbi Wollenberg on Business Ethics, Pesach, Prayer, Shechita and more.

The current series covers various mitzvot and their deeper meaning.

Each lesson is accompanied by a powerpoint presentation and comprehensive textbooks with all the sources in both Hebrew and English.

All welcome - no Hebrew knowledge required.  Wednesday nights 8pm at CUS.

UNITY LECTURE

CUS hooked up via video link-up to hundreds of other Shuls around the globe to hear the Chief Rabbi deliver a fascinating talk about the different Mitzvot surrounding Pesach, Birkas Hachamah and the concept of Hakhel every seventh year.

A  further lecture, given by Rabbi Yisroel Meir Lau, former Chief Rabbi of Israel, will take place on Monday 15th June from 8:15pm @CUS.

Shalosh Seudos

Now that summer is here (almost…) we have reverted to the summer schedule for Shabbos Mincha, starting at 6:30pm, followed by Shalosh Seudos (3rd Meal) and Maariv.  All welcome.

Rabbi Wollenberg will be starting a class on Laws of Shabbos after Maariv (around 7:45pm) on Saturday nights.

Israel at 61

CUS Members turned out in force for the South Wales Jewish Representative Council’s “Israel 61” event.  Over 120 people from across the community came together to celebrate 61 years of the State of Israel.

Israel at 61

CUS Members turned out in force for the South Wales Jewish Representative Council’s “Israel 61” event.  Over 120 people from across the community came together to celebrate 61 years of the State of Israel.

Klezmer Night

Davine Rosin and the Social & Cultural Committee organised a highly enjoyable Klezmer Café evening with accomplished musicians Chai for Two.  Some eighty patrons from around Wales spent the evening socialising, relaxing to  the music and dancing the night away to traditional Yiddishe tunes.

Chanukah

There were Chanukah events for all ages starting with the Annual Chanukah Tea organised by the Social & Cultural Committee, with excellent magical entertainment.  Close to a hundred people came along, with many children in attendance.

This was followed by parties for children, toddlers and the wider community hosted by Rabbi & Mrs Wollenberg.  Something for everyone.

Israel solidarity event

An evening of prayer and readings was organised at short notice in response to the recent events in Gaza and Israel.  A large number of Jewish and Christian supporters of Israel turned out to show their solidarity and their wish to see a genuine peace for all.  Our thanks to all the organisations which supported this event (CUS, CRS, Israel Peace Forum-Jean Evans).

FRIDAY NIGHT communal dinner

About 80 people attended Friday night dinner in the Harold Greene Hall which was organised by Rabbi Mordechai and Blima Wollenberg.

The four course delicious meal was catered by Rebbetzen Wollenberg and her merry band of ladies – all members of CUS.  The atmosphere was great.  Lots of singing and talking.  Rabbi Wollenberg expressed how pleased he was to see so many young people there.  How right he is!  The kids played an important part of the evening with Adam Salamon leading the benching  and all the kids and the adults joining in.

Rabbi Wollenberg also congratulated Les Goldsmid on his 80th birthday.  (Are you sure, Les?  I think you are 10 years YOUNGER than you are admitting to!).

This was one fabulous evening and let’s hope there are many more.

Ruth Levene

Melave malka

Rabbi & Mrs Wollenberg and family hosted members of the community for a traditional post-Shabbat “Melave Malka meal” by candlelight.  Mrs Mindy Wolfe (Mrs Wollenberg’s mother) told a traditional Chassidic story from the Baal Shem Tov.

Cholent Kiddush

Another well-attended Cholent Kiddush was held in February, kindly sponsored by one of our newest members, student Benjamin Stern.  Hopefully this will now become a regular feature in the cold winters.

Student dinner

Rabbi & Mrs Wollenberg hosted some 25 students, young adults and teens from our own community for Friday Night Dinner at their house.  How everyone fitted in was nothing short of a miracle, but it was an important opportunity to show that Jewish life in Cardiff is very much alive and well.

High Holy Days 5769

Rabbi Wollenberg was joined by Chazzan Eliot Alderman.  Rabbi Wollenberg gave  several moving and
inspiring services, several of which are reprinted in this newsletter.  Once again we had a full Shul for Rosh
Hashanah and parts of Yom Kippur, with a number of visitors and new faces as well as the regulars.

Succos and Simchas Torah

Succos
Services, for a weekday Yom Tov, were reasonably well attended.  Kiddushim were held throughout in our
Succah.  The Chassan Torah andChassan Bereishis were Anthony Jacobs and Roger Salamon who laid on the
traditional lunch for the community.  A large crowd gathered tocelebrate with the Chassanim and a good time was had by
all.
Once again a number of you purchased your own Arba Minim and built your own Succot, including several new ones this year.

Kol Nidrei appeal

The Kol Nidrei Appeal was once again held to raise money for Netanya-based  charity Food For Kids.  The Appeal has
already raised over£7000.  If you have not yet contributed it is not too late.   Once (hopefully) all the pledges are paid and
the Gift-Aid reclaimed we hope to raise nearly £10,000.

Cholent Kiddush

The first of a series of Cholent Kiddushim was held, sponsored by Rabbi & Mrs Wollenberg in honour of the birth of their
daughter Chaya Ettel.  A large crowd stayed after Shul for real, flaishige Cholent and zemirot-songs and bentsching.

SHAVUOT 5768

A wide range of events for all different age groups took place over Shavuot including dinner and all-night learning session, a dairy sit-down Kiddush, children's’ lunch and an Ice Cream and Cheesecake Party for students and teenagers

Day Camp

Now in its  5th year, our Camp had a record 23 children from both Shuls in Cardiff and as far afield as the Bahamas!  Under the stewardship of Rebbetzen Wollenberg, the children enjoyed a week of arts, crafts, trips, and Jewish activities, supplemented by delicious nutritious hot lunches daily.  The camp was staffed by sixth-formers from Lubavitch Girls School in London.  The week ended with a Shabbat party and presentation for all the parents and grandparents at the end of camp.  Many kids complained that it was only one week long!

Mesibat Shabbat Party

An inaugural monthly Shabbat party was held for babies and toddlers at Penylan House, organised by Sara Shipman, Cressida Polivnick and Rebbetzen Wollenberg.  A number of new families attended.

Cheder prize giving

A number of parents, grandparents and well-wishers attended the Cheder Prize giving.  Rabbi Wollenberg spoke about the importance of integrating what the children learn in Cheder into their everyday lives, and guest of honour was Dr Roger Gewolb, a financier, law professor and Jewish communal activist who has recently joined the Cardiff community.   Dr Gewolb spoke of the importance of Jewish education and complimented the community and particularly the teaching staff on having such an exceptional Cheder.  "Cheder should be fun" he told the audience.  Every child received a book prize and three special prizes for excellence, effort and reading were awarded to James Salamon, Jasmine Nathan and Jacob Bloom.

The CUS Cheder has enjoyed a boom in recent years with a large intake in the reception class indicative of a possible reversal of the decline in the Jewish population.

Israel Event

The Cardiff-based "Israel Peace Forum" held an evening with returning IDF soldiers David Harris and Joshua Liss who both recently completed their IDF service.  Rabbi Wollenberg chaired the evening, posing questions to David and Joshua who provided fascinating and very human insights into their army service, experiences making Aliya, the political, military and economic situation in general.  The audience of 60 people were then invited to ask questions.  Several audience members (along with the Rabbi) had expressed their pride in the boys and their achievements.

CHANUKAH 5768

This year's CUS Chanukah party was attended by alarge crowd of children and their parents.Entertainment came from a children's orchestra, conducted by Paul Rosin. Participants lit Menorah, played Jewish bingo, and enjoyed traditional Chanukah tea thanks to the CUS Social & Cultural Committee.

MELAVE MALKA

A Melave Malka meal was held at the Rabbi and Rebbetzen's house, to say goodbye to Shabbat properly. Those present sang many Jewish songs and enjoyed copious refreshments. Our thanks to Jonny Varley and Adam Gordon for the musical backing and impromptu klezmer band.

There are now a number of classes taking place on a weekly basis.  In addition, we have held a number of higher-profile adult education events, and an increasing number of people are choosing to learn one-to-one with Rabbi & Mrs Wollenberg.  See this publication for details of opportunities or contact  the Rabbi or Mrs Wollenberg to arrange private learning.

PESACH 5767

It was good to see many of you in Shul over Pesach.  Kiddushim were held all the days of Pesach and our thanks to all those who made them possible.

COMMUNAL SEDER

The Communal Seder was again well attended and enjoyed by all. The Rabbi officiated and ensured audience participation by each guest reading out a portion of the Haggadah in English (or Hebrew) accompanied by a commentary. The structure of the Seder is in many ways exemplified by the four glasses of wine, which was in plentiful supply on the evening. There was much hilarity when the wicked son read out his questions! The highlight of the Seder is for many the ten plagues, and I can vouch that there were many drops of wine removed as commanded in the Haggadah. The question that exercised the minds of many was as to whether that Maror was as bitter as previous years. Many of the guests asked for a second helping!

We next came to the meal, which was traditional chicken soup, meat and chicken platters, latkes followed by a choice of desserts. Joanne Poole and her team produced a wonderful meal and were duly congratulated both by the Rabbi and the guests. The second half of the Seder commenced with Grace after Meals, followed by Hallel. The Rabbi was in fine voice and led the singing. After the fourth cup of wine there was the usual democratic vote as to which of the optional songs should be sung. The ultimate rendition of the final song left everyone on a high after a very successful Seder. We look forward to next year in Jerusalem/Cyncoed Gardens!

FRIDAY NIGHT dinner

We held another Communal Friday Night Dinner over the Bank Holiday Weekend.  It’s always a pleasure to celebrate Shabbos with extended family and friends .

Rosh Chodesh group

The Women’s Rosh Chodesh Group continues to meet monthly.  Recent activities included Pesach planning, cheesecake tasting and flower planting.  It is a small and friendly group of ladies who meet monthly at different locations.  Please come along and join in - details within this newsletter.

Ahuva gray

Former Southern African-American Baptist Minister, now Orthodox Jew, Ahuva Gray spoke to the Cardiff Jewish community about her life story and her experiences.  This event was sponsored in memory of the late Susan Beatus (Ora Bas Yisroel ע״ה).

Mps and ams

Our local MP and AM, “the Jennies” together with the MP for Bristol West attended a Shabbat service last month.  They were very impressed by the warmth and friendliness of the community. Jenny Randerson AM commented that “I was delighted to see that the children are at the centre of things.  This is so crucial for a community.”

Kiddushim

It has been a pleasure to celebrate many different simchas with members recently.  Over the next few months we have, thank G-d, a large number of Kiddushim coming up.  Please keep them coming!  As you will see later on in this issue, making a Kiddush could be as simple as sponsoring the regular weekly Shul Kiddush.

Education

Chanukah 5767

By Roger Gewolb

Thanks to Lisa Gerson and the Social & Cultural Committee for putting on a fantastic Chanukah party, with innovative games and quiz, great food and company, enjoyed by a hundred people!

“Miri and I were not prepared for the really upscale, professional Chanukah evening we attended, the meticulously planned (numbered pasta samples for each table!) activities and the friendly, welcoming spirit and enthusiasm of all participating - how vibrant and thriving this community is!

I have now met a number of CUS families and feel very welcome and really impressed with what a success CUS is and will grow to be. I hope to be there often Please G-d.”

(Dr Roger Gewolb is a recent visitor to our community who divides his time between Cardiff and London.)

Tu Bishvat 5767

By Judy Cotsen

On Tu Bishvat, after the Shabbat service, around 60 members of the community attended a lunch in the Harold Greene Hall.

Those that attended enjoyed an excellent meal. We were served wonderful salads, meat loaf and as customary on Tu Bishvat a wide range of fruits. Some so exotic that many of us had not tasted before.

The Rebbetzen and friends had worked hard to prepare and provide us with such a good meal.

The meat loaf was exceptionally tasty and I am sure Blima will be only too pleased to give out the recipe. (Editors note: see pg 22 of this magazine for the recipe!)

Zemirot were sung followed by grace after meals performed by Haydn Cotsen.  Coffee was served and everyone went home feeling very full up and satisfied.

Chinese restaurant night

By Jackie Crocker

I really didn’t know what to expect at the Chinese Evening in the shul last week.  I thought it would be a good social event and if our Rabbi and Blima were going to take the time to provide an evening ‘with food’ then I should make the effort to go and how glad I was that I did.

It was hard to imagine the shul hall with a ‘restaurant feeling’ but the lighting was low and created the atmosphere perfectly.  Tables were dotted around the hall and The Rabbi showed yet another of his talents by being the Maitre D’ for the evening.  We were shown to our table, I was fortunate to have the company of Helen Fine and Laura Liss on my table.

The room filled and all the tables were taken, it was good to see that two big tables were taken with people from the Swansea Community who had travelled over for the evening. Sadly it was only when we were on our dessert that the Rabbi was able to start playing the piano, he had been too busy before, it really added to the evening and his ‘Candle in the Wind’ was better than Elton’s!

Also, we didn’t get to see Blima who was working so hard over hot woks in the kitchen but we were richly rewarded, yet again, by her culinary skills.

Bat mitzvah club

By Philip Dennis

On Friday night, 16th February the Bat mitzvah Club class girls, together with their siblings and parents attended a Friday Night Shul service. They braved the weather, snow having fallen on both the Thursday and Friday.

Following the service the Rabbi and Mrs. Wollenberg hosted a traditional Friday night meal which we all enjoyed.  Each of the Bat mitzvah Club girls had written a small presentation to do with  their course and they read these to us all.  Perhaps more importantly, the girls themselves had helped to prepare and cook the food and helped to serve it.

All present enjoyed the evening in a humorous and pleasurable atmosphere.

PURIM 5766

Purim this year was celebrated many times over with a carnival organized by students form the local universities, a Purim breakfast minyan and last but not least a Chinese Purim Seudah.

The Megillah was also read at Penylan House and Purim packages were delivered to many people within the community

Kiddushim

There have been a number of very special Kiddushim recently. It is always heart-warming to see an extra ‘influx’ of shulgoers and to celebrate milestones together, engagements, anniversaries, academic achievements, you name it.

Please continue to celebrate your family events with the CUS family in Shul on Shabbat.

To host a Kiddush contact Lisa Gerson on 2075 9982 or the Shul Office.

London Jewish Male Choir.

Cardiff Concert .

Sunday March 26th 2006.

As part of the celebrations for the 80th anniversary of their formation, the London Jewish Male Choir has embarked on a series of concerts in provincial venues. Last Sunday, Wales hosted a concert at the Cardiff United Synagogue, Cyncoed.

Ably supported by the Cardiff Synagogue Choir, under the direction of Ivan Margolis, the LJMC sang a varied programme of Yiddish, Hebrew and English songs which were performed to a packed house in the Harold Greene Hall.

Chazan Stephen Leas of the Central Synagogue, London and Eliot Alderman provided lyrical and moving solos that captivated the large audience.

Since the recent appointment of their new musical director and conductor, Michael Etherton, the choir has developed and expanded its repertoire. The choral sound is still rich, full and fresh, being especially strong in the bass register. The presentation is clean and bright.  Michael’s experience as a music scholar at Balliol has helped enhance the whole special choral sound, and rightly  allows the choir to be considered as one of the most sparkling jewels in anglo Jewry’s musical crown.

If you have a chance to hear them, run all the way. You will not be disappointed.

(Extra information)

Incidentally, both Ivan Margolis and Stephen Leas grew up in Johannesburg and their long standing friendship was rekindled in Cardiff last Sunday after many years many in different continents.

-------------------------------------------------------------

A host of dignitaries headed by the Chief Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks, the
Israeli Ambassador Zvi Heifetz along with the chairman of the Board of
Deputies Mr Henry Grunwald QC and the national AJEX Chairman Ron Shelley,
joined members of Caridff Untied Synagogue and Newport Hebrew Congregation
for a reception at the CUS Cyncoed Gardens Shul.  The Chief Rabbi who
addressed the assembled crowd on the subject of remembering the Holocuast.
He also praised the vibrant Jewish life which continues in Caridff and the
 surrounding areas.

Other speakers included the Israeli ambassador and the Chairman of the
Board of Deputies, who elaborated on the purpose of HMD, namely that the
Jewish people are well aware of the horrors of the Holocaust and its
lessons, the aim now is to take that message to the wider world, which has
happened with the monumental UN decision to commemorate HMD.

The dignitaries were joined by several thousand people, including many
members of the local Jewish community at the Millenium Centre for the
National Holocaust Memorial Day event, which included a performance by the
Cardiff United Synagogue Choir as well as an address by the Chief Rabbi
and participation by Cardiff Rabbi Mordechai Wollenberg.  The Choir
managed to perform their piece with gusto despite an interruption by a
heckler before they had even started (he was heckling Tony Blair, not the
 choir!)

Earlier in the afternoon, the Chief Rabbi visited the Penylan House Jewish
Retirement Home where he met members of the board and delighted residents
who were very excited at the occasion.  The Chief Rabbi praised the staff
and board of management for the wonderful and caring environment which
they provide for their residents

The next day (Friday) a memorial commemoration ceremony took place in
Cathays park, at the Raoul Wallenberg memorial, attended by local
dignatiries including the Lord Mayor of Cardiff, the leader of Cardiff
City Council Rodney Berman (who is Jewish), Mr Alan Schwartz MBE of the
South Wales Jewish Rep Council and local Rabbi Mordechai Wollenberg (no
relation!) along with members of the local community.  Mr Schwartz spoke
about Raoul Wallenberg's remarkable achievements, the Lord Mayer read the
commitment to the future and Rabbi Wollenberg recited commemorative
 prayers.

Chanukah

Chanukah saw a host of events including a doughnut kiddush, a Chanukah party with giant Lego menorah building and community parties at the Rabbi & Rebbetzen’s house.  Although it was the ‘holiday season’ and a number of people were away, it was nice to see so many people taking part in events in particular the many grandchildren who joined their parents for the Lego menorah-building!

Latkes, hot soup and doughnuts were distributed to a number of people in the community.

The electronic Menorah on the front of the Shul building was, of course, lit every night of Chanukah.

Rabbi Schochet

Some 35 people came along to hear Rabbi Immanuel Schochet, a world-renowned author of books on Judaism and Professor of Philosophy, speak about moral values in today’s society.  We hope to keep bringing you interesting and informative guest speakers every couple of months.

If you have any ideas for a guest speaker or topic, please contact Rabbi Mordechai.

Tu Bishvat chocolate fondue

Fruit is supposed to be healthy and low-fat but this year that was ruined by the Chocolate Fondue afternoon held at the Wollenbergs’ home.  Participants were invited to choose from a selection of some 18 fruits, then dip them in delicious melted chocolate from the chocolate fountain in the centre of the room.  It took some time to clean up!
