A is for... Adult education Every Wednesday night is “Adult Education” night when the Rabbi runs a series of topical classes dealing with cutting-edge contemporary issues. Other opportunities include guest speakers and weekly classes with the Rabbi, or private study with the Rabbi or Rebbetzen on a topic of your choice, at a time and place to suit you. Breakfast Time Every Friday and every weekday Rosh Chodesh after Shacharis there is a bagel breakfast for those who attend the Minyan. Calendar The CUS Calendar is distributed free of charge to CUS members, students and visitors to Cardiff. It features times of Shabbat and Yom Tov, Hebrew dates, special occasions and other useful information. Care Projects The Rabbi and volunteers are there to provide assistance to those in need, to those who are housebound, in hospital, prison or other institutions, and to arrange provisions before major festivals e.g. honey cakes, Purim packages, cheesecakes and more. Cheder Our Cheder, under the stewardship of Rabbi Wollenberg and the dedicated staff, now boasts over 25 children. The numbers have actually grown over the last few years and continue to do so. Chevra Kadisha The members of the Chevra Kadisha - or Sacred Society - provide support in the unfortunate event of a death. Under the able stewardship of Mr Tony Blasebalk and Mr Stephen Hamilton, the Chevra Kadisha is there to provide support throughout the bereavement process, both spiritual and practical, at every stage. Choir The CUS Choir has relaunched under the musical direction of Tony Blasebalk and participates in Shul services and civic events. D is for... Day camp Every summer we organise a one-week Jewish Day Camp which provides an opportunity for children to have fun and enjoy safe activities within a Jewish environment. The camp is staffed by experienced and enthusiastic youth workers and provides a unique opportunity for children to expand their Jewish horizons in a peer setting. E is for... G is for... GCSE Course Rabbi Wollenberg teaches a GCSE Jewish Studies course to a teenage group and is hoping to start an Adult GCSE as well. From time to time, CUS hosts appropriate events to bring together different communities. Israel Peace Forum The Israel Peace Forum is an organisation run by Jean Evans which promotes awareness and advocacy for Israel’s cause in the UK and Europe. Kashrus The Kashrus committee works with groups and individuals to ensure that functions on the Shul premises are catered to the highest London Beth Din standards, allowing even the most observant to participate. We are there to help you plan your Kosher Simcha or function to everyone’s satisfaction and enjoyment. Kiddushim Members frequently sponsor delicious Kiddushim to mark special occasions. When there is no sponsor, the Social & Cultural Committee provide a Kiddush put on by the Shul. Hot (Meaty) Cholent Kiddushim are hosted by the Rabbi & Rebbetzen throughout the cold winter months. Kol Nidrei Appeal Each of the past few years the Kol Nidrei Appeal has raised close to £10,000 for the Food for Kids charity in Israel which helps to feed underprivileged schoolchildren in Netanya. Money is also raised for the Appeal throughout the year by the Cheder children. L is for... Library We have an extensive library of Jewish books on a wide variety of topics, as well as a children’s library with books for all ages. The library is open during office hours or by arrangement. M is for... Mother & Baby group By popular demand, Rebbetzen Wollenberg will be starting a mother & baby group / playgroup on Sunday mornings during Cheder term time, starting this September. New Members Despite the prophecies of doom and gloom, CUS continues to attract new members, from both within and outside Cardiff, with several new families with young children moving to the community in the past year. Outreach Once upon a time, everybody joined a Shul automatically and possibly even came every Shabbos. Nowadays there are vast numbers of Jewish people around whose affiliation rates are far lower. A number have come into the fold and the Rabbi & Rebbetzen work tirelessly to continue to attract more particularly the children and grandchildren of our own members. P is for... Personal Study Rabbi & Rebbetzen Wollenberg will always find time to study or discuss Judaism on a one-to-one basis. Q is for... Question & Answer Sessions Held once ever two months in place of the Shabbos morning sermon, they provide an opportunity to address topical issues and for the Rabbi to deal with the Jewish questions on members’ minds. Religious Articles Aside from the Gift Shop, Rabbi Wollenberg can assist with the purchase of talleisim, tefillin, mezuzah scrolls and other religious items, such as Arba Minim (Lulav and Etrog) and other supplies for any major Yom Tov. S is for... Services We hold services twice a day throughout the week, and of course throughout Shabbat and Yom Tov. We are one of the very few communities outside of the larger centres which does so. Social Events Events are provided on a regular basis by the Rabbi & Rebbetzen, Education Committee and Social & Cultural Committee for all age groups. T is for... Teen programmes As well as GCSE there is a fortnightly course taught by an experienced Israeli teacher on Jewish Adulthood and Responsibility. We also try to link up with other communities for teen programmes and social events and to hold holiday programmes for teenagers around each Yom Tov. U is for... University Students CUS has always enjoyed a close relationship with students at the Universities of South Wales, with the Rabbi & Rebbetzen and many members hosting students for Shabbat meals and other occasions, and students joining the community for Shul services and social events. W is for... Women’s Rosh Chodesh group For women to relax and enjoy. Each month there is a different event, usually in a private home, with an activity, refreshments and a connection to the nearest Jewish holiday. Yahrzeit Reminders Rabbi Wollenberg organises personalised Yahrzeit reminders each month as a service to members to notify them of family yahrzeit dates. If you wish to receive reminders, please contact the Shul Office with the relevant information. Young adults - 18-35S Rabbi & Mrs Wollenberg host regular events both at their home and in Shul for students and the 18-35 age group, many of whom would not otherwise be involved in ‘mainstream’ Jewish activities, and many of whom grew up in Cardiff. |
